Singapore Battlefield Sites - Web Site
The entire Japanese Malaya campaign only lasted 70 days. The impregnable British fortress of Singapore held out less than 7 days. WWII permanently changed Singapore's fortune. It put in motion a series of events that lead to the modern city-state we see today.
This site is intended to generate interest in local WWII historical sites. For the most part the pages here reflect those seen the Fortress Singapore, The Battlefield Guide. Incredibly, even though Singapore seems to be bulldozing and pouring concrete 24 hours a day, there are many sites still around; some are obvious like Ft Siloso on Sentosa, others like the Changi Murals are tucked away and you need to obtain special permission to see them. I have included other military and military-civilian sites, that have a military connection. There is no intent to provide a detailed chronicle of the events, just let you know some of the sites that are available to see.
The books listed below are ones I personally like. There is good selection of WWII and general historical books available in Singapore. The David Brazil book is an easy read, quite entertaining and contains a surprising amount of Singapore historical fact and trivia. The Pugalenth Sr book is a good overall list of Singapore historical sites, along with general descriptions of each site. The Tan Chong Tee book was very enlightening. It gives behind the lines intelligence side of the Malayan campaign from the view of young, scared and brave Singapore Chinese student, or rather agent, working for the British. Tan was on the front lines, exposed to danger daily. He was eventually tortured in the same prison as was Lim Bo Seng. Tan survived the war and wrote an excellent chronicle of his and of Force 136's WWII exploits.
Depending on your modem connection and system hardware some of the download times may be long. One of my intensions was to include quite a few graphics.
Hopefully your interest will be peaked and you will go see these sites in person!
